Rogers Park Eats Garbage with Salt and Pepper
"If [Joe Moore] really wanted to address the culinary concerns of the 49th Ward, he wouldn't be struggling to ban foie gras but would propose an ordinance requiring Dumpsters to be equipped with salt and pepper shakers."
Neil Steinberg, Chicago Sun-Times, 09/16/2005
How incredibly insulting to our community! You may think treating animals humanely is the reflection of a civilized society or that this whole foie gras stuff is folly and hogwash, but to imply that the entire community of Rogers Park is eating out of garbage cans is so increadably insulting that one cannot stand by and call it a matter of literary license. I wouldn't deny that there may be some small number of people who find themselves in circumstances so unfortunate that this is the way they eat, but Mr. Steinberg you should know that the overwhelming majority of Rogers Parkers have never had either foie gras or garbage for dinner. We eat the same kinds of things you and your family do and we even use silverware when appropriate. You may feel Rogers Park is not a desirable place to live, but there are more than 70,000 people who call it home and most of us find it a rather nice place to live. I am certain that nobody will be missing you when you don't make it by anytime soon.
