America: Feared but not Trusted

I had the good fortune to attend a rally yesterday that was held by Jan Schakowsky and her 9th Congressional District team (of which I am a part.) The rally went very well. People got excited and signed up for important things to do that will help us win in November. All of that went exceptionally well.

During the middle of the rally a guest arrived, someone who was in town on a swing of several stops and we were very lucky that we were one of them. United States Senator Joe Biden, a Democrat from Delaware, Us_sen_joe_biden_2
was the guest speaker and he was tremendous. He put into words something that many have been struggling for months to find the right words to say. He told us in his role as the ranking Democrat on Senate Foreign Relations committee that he is frequently in touch with the leaders of the world. He told us of the worlds growing contempt for America. And then he said it: the comment that has crystallizes our countries current predicament. He said, “the leaders of the world have no question of America’s power, they have questions of our judgment.” This is the reason that not only America, but also the world so desperately needs a change in the White House.

At no time in the last 100 years and even longer, have the morals and the values of the United States of America been in serious question by our friends and allies. We have gone from a powerful and just nation of the world to a bully, not interested in what is right, but interested in what is best for us. We no longer have any moral ground beneath our feet; we stand on self-interest, self-righteousness and the mistaken notion that Bush’s policy of pre-emptive strike has significantly improved the worlds standing. As is so often the case with conservative Republicans they have done what they are so good at. They have improved the quality of life for hundreds of rich Americans at the expense of tens of millions of middle class and poor Americans.

Even under Reagan, we always managed to balance our needs with the worlds needs and make this earth a better place because of our involvement. As Sen. Biden so rightly said it is time to restore America’s good name in the world and John Kerry is the only man in this race that can do that.
