Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Democratic Party of the 49th Ward. We are the local Democratic Party for the Rogers Park, West Ridge and Edgewater communities of the city of Chicago. As a liberal/progressive, grass roots, and membership empowered organization we work hard to elect progressive Democratic candidates. Once we get them elected, we work even harder to keep them in office. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky is a perfect example of the type of candidate we support. She shares our strong belief in good government.

The 49th Ward is a very diverse community in every sense of the word, be it economics, race, religion or education, except in politics. We are unabashedly one of the most liberal places in America.  In order to keep things that way, at the local level we support balanced development in the community so that every person can have a place in our neighborhood. Our goal is to maintain the tremendous strength and diversity that we enjoy today, and continue to be a role model for the nation well into the 21st century.

Because we value our diversity and want to maintain a community that offers opportunities for everyone, we continuously work to expand and grow our organization. While most of the people of the 49th ward agree with us, not everyone does. Having a strong political organization that believes in this agenda for the neighborhood helps us to elect political leaders, from the White House to the Alderman's office, who support our vision. That is why I have held more over 100 community meetings in my tenure as Committeeman, all throughout the ward. I want to be certain that every person who wants the opportunity to be involved in Democratic politics and progressive government has the chance.

In the pages of this site you will find information that will assist you in registering to vote, how to become a volunteer, how to locate your polling place and how to contact us.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Polling Places

On Election Day, one of the most important things to know is where to go and vote. In our densely populated neighborhood there may be a polling place on your way to the train or the store, but in order to vote you must go to the polling place that has your voting information. The following list is provided to help you find your polling place. By using the precinct number on your Voter's Registration card you can find the address and description of your polling place. If you do not know your precinct number please go to the Chicago Board of Elections website.

Volunteer Now

The Democratic Party of the 49th Ward is a member based organization that succeeds and fails based on the support of people like yourself. Being involved in the organization will provide you with the opportunity to learn practical politics, campaigning the old-fashion way and the high tech way, and how good it feels working in the community. We're more than willing to help you find out how you can make a difference in the 49th Ward, and in the process, you will meet lots of good people, your neighbors.

Need something more than just politics? We are also involved in community activities such as the "Back to School" Picnic, Child Safety Day, and helping the Alderman's office to distribute information about community events and meetings. We have something for everyone.

Please, take a moment and send us an e-mail or give us a call.  You might also try and stop by the Ward Office at 1774 W. Greenleaf and see how you can help.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Precinct Captain
A precinct Captain assumes the responsibility for a precinct, preferably the one they live in. It requires contacting the voters, in person and/or by phone, in that precinct with various pieces of information throughout the election. The primary task is identifying voters who support our candidates and making sure they get out and vote. Persuading them to support the candidates of the Democratic Party is essential. In addition, on Election Day the Precinct Captain is responsible for the precinct including supervising all Assistant Captains, Block Captains, and volunteers, delivering lunches and donuts, as well as trying to insure that all rules and laws governing the election are upheld, enforced and followed.

Block Captain
The responsibilities of a Block Captain are to assume responsibility for a specific block in much the way a Precinct Captain does for the precinct. Election Day responsibilities are much the same, but performed under the guidance and direction of the Precinct Captain.

Flyer Hanging
This role involves little direct contact with the voter. The primary goal is to distribute information, most often flyers, to a specific area regarding some special information we would like to get out to the community. This can be both political or community based information. This role does not require Election Day activities, although one would be strongly urged to pitch in and help.

Voter Registration
Voter registration is empowering the people. Whether done door to door, at the grocery store or at the train station you can play a part in encouraging people to participate. This activity can be done in many different places and ways. We can sponsor you to be a Deputy Registrar or you can start instantly using N.V.R.A. cards. Let us know how we can help you.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES

Phone Banking
The role of a phone banker is to contact either voters or members of the organization via the telephone. The goal is to use persuasion to persuade them to vote for the Democratic candidate or to call volunteers and/or members to provide information.

Office Help
This role provides basic office functions common to any campaign. They range from stuffing envelopes to answering phones to picking up and delivering materials. It can also include data entry, record keeping, web page designing and eventually web page maintenance.

Election Judge
This role is performed on Election Day in the polling place. An Election Judge goes to training, learns the rules and laws regarding election activity, and insures that the operation of the polling place is in compliance with those guidelines.

Because of the hard work of so many good Democratic leaders, registering to vote has become easier that it has ever been before. Because of the Motor Voter act you can register without ID at any of the sites listed below. Several of the sites (those indicated) also offer registration by Deputy Registrars, which requires ID. In terms of voting, a Motor Voter registrant must vote in person the first time they vote at this new address and have ID on Election Day. A person registered by a Deputy Registrar can vote by absentee ballot the first time.

David Fagus, Your Democratic Committeeman

David Fagus was born and raised in the 49th Ward and has made a commitment to the Rogers Park/Edgewater community both politically and also reaching well beyond politics and government as a member, contributor and supporter of many community activities. Fagus and his family are living a life dedicated to public service, David as a health care administrator and his wife Tanya who is a police officer.

David Fagus was appointed to fill a vacancy in the Democratic Ward Committeeman’s position in 1993, was elected in 1996, and was reelected in 2000 and 2004. As the Democratic Ward Committeeman Fagus has promoted and encouraged people to become part of the Democratic Party of the 49th Ward. His work to broaden the party has shown itself in the membership and the leadership of our local party. The board of the organization has 12 members that represent some of the great diversity of Rogers Park is so proud of.  Fagus is a builder and one who subscribes to the “big tent” theory of involvement that welcomes everyone under the “big tent” of the Democratic Party. He has taken the theory beyond words and shown the action and the leadership to have sponsored well over 100 local meetings encouraging all who come to get involved and to join the Democratic Party.

In the past Fagus has worked hard to send Jan Schakowsky to Congress, Jessie White to Springfield, Julie Hamos and Harry Osterman to the state legislature, Larry Suffredin to the Cook County Board, Dick Durbin and Bill Clinton to Washington D.C.  In 2004, when he was still the unknown State Senator from the Southside of Chicago Fagus took the bold step of endorsing Barack Obama, another progressive Democratic leader to become the next United States Senator of Illinois. He has served as part of the Dorothy Brown transition team and has worked hard to see her re-elected Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He shares an office and a political philosophy with his officemate Alderman Joe Moore of the 49th Ward.  But more important than any campaign or candidate he has ever worked for he is committed and working hard to making Barack Obama the next President of the United States.

Knowing that the life a community extends beyond the voting booth Fagus has been committed and involved in many community activities serving as a member, board member, contributor or volunteer in what is now countless projects, committees and organizations. Currently Fagus is a member of DevCorp North and is a former member of their Board of Directors, is a member of the 49th Ward Zoning and Land Use Advisory Council, is an advisory board member of the Rogers Park Section 8 Tenants Council, serves on the Howard St. C.T.A. station renovation committee, is a life member of the Friends of the Rogers Park Library, is a member of the Morse Ave. Redevelopment Task Force and is a member of the Rogers Park Community Council. Additionally Fagus has attended CAPS meetings crime walks and anti-crime rallies throughout the ward and has participated in numerous activities bringing the community together to fight against crime and violence.

David, who has a Masters degree in Public Administration, and a B.A. in political studies was married to his wife Tanya on September 1, 2002 and lives in the heart of Rogers Park at the corner of Lunt and Greenview with their English Bulldogs, Harley and Rocky.
